
From June 8-14, 2026, the FISU World University Championship Combat Sports competition was held successfully in Brasília, the capital of Brazil. The event was hosted by the International University Sports Federation (FISU) and organized by the Brazilian University Sports Confederation – CBDU and the Brasília 2026 FISU World University Championship Combat Sports Organizing Committee, featuring five disciplines: Wushu, Ju-Jitsu, Karate, Muaythai, and Wrestling. The event brough together 1,500 participants from approximately 50 countries.


The wushu competition attracted 82 athletes from 14 countries and regions. On June 13, wushu concluded its competitions at the Brasília 2026 FISU World University Championship Combat Sports with a showcase of technical excellence, artistic precision and thrilling sanda contests. Over six days of competition, university athletes from around the world competed in both taolu and sanda disciplines, highlighting the diversity and growing global reach of the sport.



The wushu competition consisted of two disciplines – taolu and sanda – with a total of 24 events. Taolu featured 14 events: women's changquan, jianshu, qiangshu, nanquan, nandao, taijiquan, and taijijian; and men's changquan, daoshu, gunshu, nanquan, nangun, taijiquan, and taijijian. Sanda featured 10 weight categories: women's 48kg, 52kg, 56kg, 60kg, and 65kg; and men's 48kg, 52kg, 60kg, 70kg, and 80kg.
After all 24 events were completed, Hong Kong, China finished at the top of the overall medal standings in wushu, followed by Turkey and China. Brazil placed fifth overall, highlighted by a gold medal in the men’s sanda competition and several podium finishes across both disciplines, further demonstrating the country’s progress in university wushu. Canada ranked fourth, the United States took sixth place, Singapore placed seventh, Spain finished eighth, Thailand secured ninth, Italy came tenth, and the 11th and 12th positions went to Republic of Korea and Hungary, respectively.

Host nation Brazil also enjoyed memorable moments in front of its home crowd. Brazilian athletes reached the podium in several events, including a world university title won by Lucas Gabriel Quirino de Freitas in the men’s 52kg sanda category. The performances underscored the continued development of Brazilian wushu and its increasing competitiveness on the international stage.

The IWUF appointed international technical officials from 19 countries and regions to officiate the competitions, ensuring fairness, justice, and transparency throughout the event. Alim Maluf Neto, President of the Brazilian University Sports Confederation (CBDU), and Andra Uccello, Director of FISU Championships and World Cups, attended the wushu competitions on-site and spoke highly of the organization and execution of the events.
Wushu was officially included in the FISU World University Games program in 2014. It made its debut at the 29th Summer Universiade in 2017. The first FISU World University Wushu Championship was successfully held in Macao, China, in 2018, marking a significant milestone in the development of wushu among university students worldwide. In 2022, the FISU World University Championship Combat Sports Cup was held in Samsun, Türkiye, from September 21 to 30. In 2023, wushu once again appeared as an official medal sport at the 31st Summer Universiade in Chengdu, with 20 gold medals awarded, further demonstrating its enduring appeal and vitality among global university students.
Looking ahead, the IWUF will continue to deepen its cooperation with the FISU, helping to elevate the development of university wushu to a new level.
