On August 16, Mr. Ding Peiyi, Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of the Chinese Embassy in Mauritius attended the opening ceremony of the celebration of World Wushu-Kungfu Day, held at Caudan Waterfront in Port Louis, together with H.E. Mr. Jean Yvan Robert Hungley, Vice-President of Mauritius; Mrs. Mehzabeen Caramtali, Deputy Lord Mayor of Port Louis; Mr. Yang Jun, Director of the China Cultural Center in Mauritius and wushu enthusiasts from China and Mauritius.
In his address, H.E. Mr. Hungley highlighted that wushu has taken root in Mauritius, becoming a vibrant symbol of China–Mauritius cultural exchange and diversity. For young people, he noted that wushu not only strengthens the body, but also builds discipline, resilience and character. He called on Mauritius’ younger generation to draw strength and confidence from wushu, and move forward into the future with greater courage and determination.
Mr. Ding Peiyi stated that 2026 marks the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges. Wushu has built a bridge for cultural exchange and mutual learning between China and Mauritius, as well as between China and Africa, while carrying forward the traditional friendship between our peoples. He expressed the hope that the younger generation in Mauritius would embrace the spirit of wushu, build friendships through wushu, and work hand in hand to enrich the cultural and people to people exchanges.
On that day, a variety of colorful taijiquan and wushu performances were held at the venue, drawing many local residents to stop and watch. The lively atmosphere fully showcased the unique charm of wushu.
