From July 27—31 2024, the International Wushu Judges Training and Certification Course was successfully held in Wuhan. The event was hosted by the International Wushu Federation, organized by the Chinese Wushu Association and the Wuhan Institute of Physical Education. A total of 94 international student judges from 26 countries and regions participated in the course. The Chinese Wushu Association also gathered 36 audit students to attend the courses.
The Opening Ceremony was attended by Zhang Qiuping, Secretary General of the International Wushu Federation (IWUF); Zhang Yuping, Director General of Wushu Administrative Center of the General Administration of Sport of China and President of Wushu Research Institute of the General Administration of Sport of China; Chen Jiping, Secretary of the Party Committee of Wuhan Institute of Physical Education; Sherif Mostafa, Vice President of IWUF, and Vice Chair of the IWUF’s Judges’ Committee; Li Yongqiang, Deputy Director of Wushu Administrative Center of the General Administration of Sport of China and Vice President of Wushu Research Institute of the General Administration of Sport of China; Zheng Lihui, Deputy Director General and member of Party Committee of the Hubei Administration of Sport; Zhu Lei, member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Deputy Dean of Wuhan Institute of Physical Education; Marcus Alves, Iwan Kwok and Jennifer Dai Juan Gu who are members of the IWUF’s Judges’ Committee, as well as Lin Xiaomei, Gao Chulan and Liu Zhigang, lecturers of the taolu course and Zhao Bin, Liang Yadong and Cai Qingchi, lecturers of the sanda course.
At the Opening Ceremony, the Secretary General of the IWUF, Zhang Qiuping stated that the essential aim of the Course is to spread the culture of wushu, to nurture more outstanding wushu judges, and to continuously enhance the capacity and proficiency of wushu adjudication enforcement. Therefore, judges shall shoulder the mission of passing on, practicing and disseminating wushu and making it a truly global sport.
The Training and Certification Course encompasses two courses of taolu and sanda. During the 5 days, the judges received in-depth training in topics such as Competition Rules and Judging Methods, Technical Practice and Scoring Analysis. They also attended the exams of Comprehensive Theory, Practical Operation, and Technical Tests. In the end, a total of 64 judges passed the certification exam, including 25 taolu judges and 39 sanda judges. Among them, 11 judges received the international A-level certification and 53 received the international B-level certification.
At the Closing Ceremony, the Secretary General of the IWUF, Zhang Qiuping commended the diligence and progress of all judges and expressed his hope that starting from this experience, the judges could proceed to spread the spirit of wushu, bring more rigor to the adjudication cause, and manifest wushu’s charm and influence in the international arena to take it to the next level.
